Please read the article with the following questions in mind, record your responses and bring them to the next session on May 23rd.<br \/>\nWe will ask you to discuss your research design critique with those who read the same paper during the class on May 23rd and to prepare a collaboratively written critique for sharing on Webcourses.<\/p>\n<p>Some questions to think about\u2026<\/p>\n<p>1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Is there a clear research question?<br \/>\nNot exactly.\u00a0 However, the research project sought to focus on the textual engagements in digital environments by third level students.<\/p>\n<p>2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Is the methodology clearly stated by the author(s)?<\/p>\n<p>Yes.\u00a0 Fine-grained, ethnographic-style (Green &amp; Bloome 1997) research of literacies and<br \/>\ntechnologies in higher education.<\/p>\n<p>3.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 What methods have the author(s) used?<br \/>\nQualitative text based methods.\u00a0 There were three sets of interviews over six months.<br \/>\nInterviews carried out in small groups (3 to 4) as well as some individual interviews.\u00a0 These were followed up by email, chat, text.\u00a0 This follow-up is what the authors call \u2018shadowing\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>4.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 What issues \u2013 if any \u2013 arose during the data collection phases?<br \/>\nNot being insider researchers resulted in limitations in data collection.\u00a0 Students did not spend much time in the institutions outside of lectures.\u00a0 Many students worked part-time.<\/p>\n<p>5.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 What are the main strengths of the research design?<\/p>\n<p>(a) Good stratified sampling by using 45 students from three very different third level<br \/>\ninstitutions.\u00a0 This yielded a broad spectrum of students.
